Paris, Paris
Queer ballroom and dance hall in a 1725 building, dancing since 1896.
Tango Paris (La Boîte à Frissons) is a queer ballroom and dance club in a building that dates to 1725, operating as a dance hall since 1896. Located on Rue au Maire in the 3rd arrondissement, at the northern edge of Le Marais. Queer activist Hervé Latapie gave it its LGBTQ+ identity in 1997; after a COVID closure, the Paris municipality purchased the building and a community cooperative (SCIC) now manages it. Friday and Saturday nights start with couple dancing — waltz, tango, paso doble, cha cha — before the midnight Madison ritual transitions the room into disco and club music until dawn. Wednesday and Sunday afternoon tea dances round out the schedule. The crowd crosses generations and nationalities, united by the dance floor.
