The Hawk has run as a gay bar on Detroit Avenue since 1976, when it opened as the Tomahawk inside a room that first poured drinks in 1933 — making it one of the oldest continuously operating bars in Ohio. It sits in Cudell on the West Side, a few blocks east of the West 117th and Detroit junction that anchors Cleveland's gay nightlife, and it has stayed true to its dive roots: a pool table, an internet jukebox, gaming machines, and a rear patio for warm nights. This is the unpretentious end of the scene — cheap drinks, no attitude at the bar, and a regular crowd that actually knows each other. It's the place to settle into a night on the West Side rather than the spot for a big production. The Hawk also leans into its role as a community room, putting on holiday potlucks and a Thanksgiving meal for patrons who'd otherwise spend it alone.
