Part of the Gay San Diego Guide — bars, events & things to do.

San Diego, California
San Diego's oldest LGBTQ+ bar, in Hillcrest since the 1930s.
The Brass Rail is San Diego's oldest LGBTQ+ bar, with a lineage running back to 1934, when it opened downtown inside the Orpheum Theater. It turned predominantly gay under owner Lou Arko in the late 1950s, followed him to Hillcrest in the 1960s, and has sat at the corner of Fifth and Robinson since 1973. In 2026 it reclaimed its full historic name after years simply as 'The Rail,' restoring a sign and a legacy that predates almost every other bar in the city. Under its first LGBTQ+ ownership, in place since 2023, today's Brass Rail pairs that history with a modern remodel and a lounge feel, leaning into Latin nights, DJ sets, and weekend drag. It's both a living piece of San Diego queer history and a genuinely good night out, an anchor at the south end of the Hillcrest scene worth a stop for the story alone.
