Subscribe NowSan Antonio has one of the biggest and most overlooked gay bar scenes in Texas — and arguably the most character-packed strip of LGBTQ+ nightlife in the South. The Strip on North Main Avenue in Tobin Hill has been the city's gayborhood since the 1970s, and in 2025 it was officially designated as the Pride Cultural Heritage District. Within a few walkable blocks, you've got a dive bar that's been pouring since the 1950s, a high-energy nightclub, a leather bar, drag shows nearly every night of the week, and drinks that cost a fraction of what you'd pay in Austin or Dallas — plus the legendary multi-level Bonham Exchange (which has hosted everyone from Tina Turner to RuPaul) a short ride south downtown, and a country-western saloon playing Tejano music just north of the Strip.
What makes San Antonio's scene unique is its deep Tejano and Latinx influence. The city's LGBTQ+ nightlife reflects its broader culture — expect bilingual crowds, Tejano music at the country bar, and a queer community that's been rooted in this neighborhood for over 50 years. The Strip isn't a gentrified gayborhood that sprang up last decade; it's an institution with real history and a community that protects it.
Here are the 10 best LGBTQ+ bars and clubs in San Antonio, plus honorable mentions and tips for navigating the scene.
Pro Tip
San Antonio's gay bars are concentrated on North Main Avenue in the Tobin Hill neighborhood — locally known as "The Strip," roughly the 1300–1900 blocks (Elmira to Mistletoe). You can hit most of the major bars on foot within a few blocks. Rainbow sidewalks along Main Avenue from Laurel to Park mark the heart of the Pride Cultural Heritage District.
1. Bonham Exchange
411 Bonham St, Tobin Hill · Dance club · San Antonio's most iconic LGBTQ+ venue
Bonham Exchange is the crown jewel of San Antonio's gay scene — a massive, multi-level dance club in a stunning 1891 building (originally Turner Hall, built by the German athletic association Turn Verein) that has been the anchor of LGBTQ+ nightlife since Hap Veltman opened it in July 1981. Three stories of pressed Chicago brick with Kerrville limestone and granite house 10+ bar stations, a massive patio, multiple dance floors, and a legacy that includes performances by Tina Turner, the Ramones, Iggy Pop, Deborah Harry, and RuPaul.
The main dance floor is where the energy peaks on weekends — DJs, lights, and a crowd that comes to move. The patio is the social hub between sets, and the upper levels offer different vibes depending on the night. Bonham also houses the Happy Foundation, a collection dedicated to preserving LGBTQ+ history.
- Don't miss: Trash Disco (every third Sunday — a local institution), weekend DJ nights, and drag performances on the main stage
- Good to know: The building itself is worth visiting even if you're not there for nightlife. Check the Happy Foundation display for LGBTQ+ history. Cover varies by night ($5-10 on weekends, often free earlier in the evening)
2. Heat
1500 N Main Ave, Tobin Hill · Nightclub · The Strip's high-energy anchor
Heat is the high-energy nightclub on The Strip — multiple bars, a video lounge, an outdoor patio, and nightly drag performances that feature some of San Antonio's top queens. Opened in 2001 by Randy Cunnif (who has owned bars on The Strip for 38+ years) in a converted 1950s antique shop, Heat has become one of the anchoring venues of the gayborhood. The main room is all about the DJ and the dance floor, while the patio offers a breather without leaving the party.
- Don't miss: Nightly drag shows (the queens here are sharp), weekend DJ sets, and the outdoor patio when the main floor gets packed
- Good to know: Right in the middle of The Strip, easy to hop between Heat and neighboring bars. The drag lineup rotates — check their social media for the week's schedule
3. Pegasus
1402 N Main Ave, Tobin Hill · Bar/nightclub · The Sunday drag brunch legend
Pegasus is a lively bar with a dance floor, regular drag shows, and the legendary Sunday Budget Beer Brunch — cheap drinks plus drag entertainment emceed by San Antonio icon Tersa Mathews, starting at 5 PM. The bar attracts a fun, loud, welcoming crowd and is a strong contender for the most purely enjoyable night out on The Strip. It's the bar where everyone ends up at some point during the weekend.
- Don't miss: Sunday Budget Beer Brunch with drag by Tersa Mathews (5 PM — a San Antonio institution), weekend dance nights, and the neighborhood regulars who make this place what it is
- Good to know: More neighborhood-bar energy than Bonham or Heat — it's big enough to dance but small enough to meet people. Drinks are well-priced
Pro Tip
San Antonio bar prices are dramatically cheaper than other major LGBTQ+ destinations. Most bars on The Strip run $5-8 for well drinks and beers — no $18 cocktails here. Pegasus's Sunday Budget Beer Brunch is one of the best deals in Texas: cheap drinks plus free drag entertainment.
4. Sparky's Pub
1416 N Main Ave, Tobin Hill · Dive bar · A Strip institution
Sparky's Pub is the dive bar that anchors The Strip's history — the building has been a bar since the 1950s (originally the Swank Lounge) and is one of the oldest bars on The Strip. Strong drinks, a great patio, and a welcoming mixed crowd that's been coming here for years. This is the bar where locals go when they want a drink without any pretense. No cover, no dress code, no DJ — just a solid neighborhood bar with real history under its belt.
- Don't miss: The patio (one of the best outdoor spots on The Strip), the bartenders who know everyone, and the sense of drinking in a bar that's been part of the neighborhood for decades
- Good to know: Cash-friendly, no-frills, and proud of it. The perfect first stop or last stop on a Strip bar crawl. Strong pours
5. The SA Country Saloon
1134 W Hildebrand Ave (Olmos Park area) · Country bar · Tejano meets two-stepping
The SA Country Saloon is the most uniquely San Antonio bar on this list — a country-western gay bar where Tejano and country music share the jukebox, karaoke nights draw regulars, and drag shows add flair to the mix. If you're coming from another city, this is the bar you won't find anywhere else. The mix of Tejano music, two-stepping, and queer nightlife reflects San Antonio's cultural identity in a way no other gay bar in town quite captures. It's not on The Strip — it's a quick rideshare north on W Hildebrand — but it's worth the trip.
- Don't miss: Karaoke nights (the crowd gets into it), drag shows with a Tejano-country twist, and the two-step dancing if you're brave enough to try
- Good to know: Located off The Strip at 1134 W Hildebrand Ave. The music rotates between country, Tejano, and Top 40 depending on the night. Friendly crowd that loves teaching newcomers to dance. Affordable drinks
Pro Tip
San Antonio's LGBTQ+ scene reflects the city's broader Latinx culture — expect bilingual crowds, Tejano music at multiple venues, and a strong Latinx queer presence. The SA Country Saloon and Bonham Exchange lean into this identity. If you're visiting from a more homogeneous scene, the cultural diversity is one of the best things about nightlife here.

6. Knockout
North Main Ave, Tobin Hill · Neighborhood bar · The laid-back option
Knockout is the bar on The Strip where the energy dials down a notch — pool tables, affordable drinks, and a relaxed crowd that's here for conversation and games rather than dancing. It's connected to The Eagle at Knockout, giving you access to two different vibes in one complex. If the dance clubs feel like too much, Knockout is your reset button.
- Don't miss: Pool tournaments, the laid-back patio, and the easy access to The Eagle next door
- Good to know: More of a hangout than a destination — great for starting or ending the night. Connected to The Eagle at Knockout for leather/bear nights
7. The Eagle at Knockout
North Main Ave, Tobin Hill · Leather/bear bar · San Antonio's kink community anchor
The Eagle at Knockout is San Antonio's leather and bear bar — housed within the Knockout complex, it caters to a community that takes its scene seriously. Themed nights, a darker vibe, and a crowd that appreciates gear, leather, and community. It's the Eagle brand's Texas Hill Country outpost, and it fills a niche that no other bar on The Strip covers.
- Don't miss: Themed nights (check the schedule for gear/leather/underwear nights), the community regulars, and the contrast between The Eagle's vibe and Knockout's laid-back energy next door
- Good to know: Dress codes apply on themed nights. Welcoming to respectful newcomers. The two-bar complex gives you options
8. Cobalt
2022 McCullough Ave · Neighborhood gay bar · The low-key option
Cobalt is an easygoing neighborhood gay bar off The Strip on McCullough Avenue — a more laid-back, lower-key alternative to the dance clubs and dive bars on North Main. If you want a relaxed drink away from the crowds, this is a solid change of pace.
- Don't miss: The neighborhood-bar vibe, friendly regulars, and the contrast with The Strip's louder rooms
- Good to know: Located on McCullough Avenue, not The Strip. More intimate than the big clubs — good for a quieter night or a drink before heading to the dance floor elsewhere
9. 800LIVE Nightclub and Venue
San Antonio · Nightclub · The DJ-driven option
800LIVE brings energetic DJ sets, live performances, and themed nights to San Antonio's LGBTQ+ scene. The crowd is diverse, the music is loud, and the programming leans into the party-forward side of the spectrum. When you want a club experience beyond Bonham and Heat, this is the alternative.
- Don't miss: Themed event nights, guest DJ sets, and the energy that picks up after midnight
- Good to know: Check the event calendar — programming varies widely by night. Cover charges apply for bigger events
10. Paramour At The Phipps
102 9th St, San Antonio · Rooftop bar/restaurant · The drag brunch destination
Paramour At The Phipps isn't a gay bar by name, but it's earned its place on this list for hosting San Antonio's premier drag brunch — Saturday and Sunday at 11 AM ($22). The rooftop setting, craft cocktails, full brunch menu, and polished drag performances make this the daytime complement to The Strip's nightlife. It's where you start the weekend before the evening takes over.
- Don't miss: Saturday or Sunday drag brunch (11 AM, $22 — book ahead on busy weekends and Pride weekend), the rooftop views, and the cocktail menu
- Good to know: Not on The Strip — located near downtown. The drag brunch is the main draw for the LGBTQ+ crowd. Reservations recommended for weekend brunch

Honorable Mentions
These bars didn't make the top 10, but they're all part of the scene and worth a visit if you're exploring beyond the main Strip venues.
Purgatory
San Antonio · Late-night spot · Themed events and a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd
A late-night option with themed events that draws a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd. Good for keeping the night going after other bars wind down.

A casual hangout with a loyal local following and affordable drinks. The kind of bar where everyone knows each other.
Sparks Club
San Antonio · Neighborhood bar · Intimate and low-key

club 727
1812 N Main Ave · Dance club · DJ and Latin nights
A large (~18,000 sq ft) dance club on The Strip — the longtime venue formerly known as the Silver Dollar Saloon and later Club Silver, now reborn as club 727 with DJ sets, drag, and Latin nights.
Pro Tip
San Antonio has more LGBTQ+ bars than you'd expect — 15+ venues across the city. The Strip is the epicenter, but explore beyond it if you're staying for a few days. Each bar has its own character and regulars. Ask the bartenders at any Strip bar for their recommendations — they'll steer you right.
Which Bar Is Right for You?
Not sure where to start? Here's the cheat sheet:
- I want to dance. Bonham Exchange (multi-level dance club, the biggest), Heat (high-energy nightclub), 800LIVE (DJ-driven)
- I want a chill drink. Sparky's Pub (classic dive, great patio), Knockout (pool tables, relaxed), Cobalt (laid-back neighborhood bar)
- I want drag. Pegasus (Sunday Budget Beer Brunch), Heat (nightly performances), Paramour At The Phipps (Saturday/Sunday brunch)
- I want leather/kink. The Eagle at Knockout — themed nights and community
- I want something uniquely San Antonio. The SA Country Saloon — Tejano music, two-stepping, drag shows. You won't find this anywhere else
- I'm on a date. Paramour At The Phipps (rooftop brunch), Cobalt (low-key neighborhood bar), Sparky's Pub (patio, low-key)
- I'm visiting for the first time. Start at Bonham Exchange (the icon), then walk The Strip hitting Pegasus, Heat, and Sparky's Pub
Can I Do a Bar Crawl on The Strip?
Absolutely — The Strip is built for bar crawls. Here are three routes:
- The full Strip crawl: Sparky's Pub → Pegasus → Heat → club 727 → Knockout → The Eagle at Knockout. A row of Strip bars within a few blocks, zero cabs needed. Start early at happy hour, then cap the night with a short rideshare south to Bonham Exchange downtown for its dance floor
- The quick-hit crawl: Pegasus (drinks and drag) → Heat (dance and drag) → Bonham Exchange (dance floor closer). Three bars, the core experience, perfect if you only have one night
- The daytime-to-nighttime crawl: Paramour drag brunch (11 AM) → Pearl District for lunch → Rainbow Sidewalks photo walk → Sparky's Pub patio (happy hour) → Pegasus → Bonham Exchange. Day-through-night, only in San Antonio
Is San Antonio LGBTQ+-Friendly?
Very much so — San Antonio scores a perfect 100/100 on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index and has had a Non-Discrimination Ordinance covering sexual orientation and gender identity since 2013. The Tobin Hill gayborhood has been home to a visible LGBTQ+ community since the 1970s, and the 2025 designation as the Pride Cultural Heritage District made it official. The Strip is one of the most welcoming neighborhoods in Texas for LGBTQ+ visitors.
Note that Texas has no statewide LGBTQ+ protections — the city ordinance is the primary protection layer. Within San Antonio proper, the LGBTQ+ community is deeply established, visible, and welcoming.
How Do I Get to The Strip?
The Strip on North Main Avenue is about 1 mile north of the River Walk/downtown area:
- From River Walk hotels: Walk north on Main Avenue (15-20 minutes) or rideshare ($6-10)
- From the Pearl District: Walk south on Main Avenue (5-10 minutes) — The Strip is adjacent
- From the airport (SAT): Rideshare or taxi, about 15 minutes to The Strip or downtown
Uber, Lyft, and the local rideshare option Leep are all widely available. Parking near The Strip is limited on weekends — rideshare is the move.
Pro Tip
Download the Out x Out app for a map of every LGBTQ+ venue in San Antonio. The app shows you what's nearby wherever you are — much easier than Googling bar addresses while you're on The Strip.
