How we rank the gayest states
Most “gayest states” lists rank by the share of adults who identify as LGBTQ+. We rank differently — by scene: how strong a state's actual gay cities are for someone visiting or living there. Every ranking here is built up from the Out x Out Gay City Score, which rates individual cities 1–100 across eight categories (nightlife, safety and legal protections, community, events, drag, social life, travel and living).
Each state's score blends three things. First, the strength of its best gay city — the ceiling of the scene. Second, its breadth — a state with six scored gay cities is a gayer place to explore than one with a single standout, so depth earns a bonus. Third, its statewide LGBTQ+ legal climate, shown as a colored chip on every state below. That last factor is why a state can be packed with gay cities and still rank lower: a great night out doesn't undo weak statewide protections.
The result rewards states that combine a great flagship scene, real depth, and supportive law. California tops the list; a state like Florida holds a high spot on the strength of six gay cities even as its limited statewide protections keep more protective states right on its heels. It's a scene ranking, not a population estimate — and it updates as we score new cities.
