What is the Gay Neighborhood in Minneapolis?
The Twin Cities' primary gay neighborhood is the Loring Park / Hennepin Avenue corridor in downtown Minneapolis. This historic district has been the heart of Minneapolis's LGBTQ+ community since the 1970s, anchored by Loring Park — the home of Twin Cities Pride, one of the largest Pride festivals in the Midwest.
Loring Park & Hennepin Avenue
The gayborhood stretches along Hennepin Avenue from Grant Street south through downtown, with the densest concentration of LGBTQ+ venues between downtown and Uptown. Major landmarks include The Saloon (one of the oldest and largest gay bars in the Upper Midwest, open since 1977), Gay 90's (a sprawling multi-floor venue with drag shows dating back to 1964), and Roxy's Cabaret (a dedicated drag performance venue on Nicollet Mall). Loring Park itself serves as the community's outdoor gathering space and the center of Pride festivities each June.
Uptown Minneapolis
The Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue intersection area has historically attracted a large LGBTQ+ population. While more mixed than the Loring Park core, Uptown remains queer-friendly with several LGBTQ+-owned businesses and welcoming nightlife.
Cathedral Hill / Selby Avenue (St. Paul)
Across the river, St. Paul's queer community centers on the Cathedral Hill neighborhood along Selby and Grand Avenues. The scene here is more residential and café-oriented, with LGBTQ+-owned restaurants and bars like Black Hart of Saint Paul — a queer soccer bar with drag shows and community events. St. Paul's vibe is more intimate and neighborhood-integrated compared to Minneapolis's bar-centric scene.
Northeast Minneapolis
The Northeast neighborhood along Central Avenue has emerged as a creative hub with LGBTQ+-friendly venues including LUSH Lounge & Theater, a dedicated drag and cabaret theater, and Jetset Underground, a queer dance bar.
