Neighborhoods·Pittsburgh Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh's LGBTQ+ scene is uniquely decentralized. Rather than one concentrated gayborhood, queer life thrives across multiple neighborhoods — each with its own character and community.

Shadyside

The most established LGBTQ+ neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Shadyside is centered along Walnut Street and Ellsworth Avenue on the city's East End. It's home to the Pride Intersection — a rainbow-painted crosswalk that has become an iconic Pittsburgh landmark — and 5801 Video Lounge and Cafe, a mainstay of LGBTQ+ nightlife with a lounge, dance floor, and outdoor patio. Shadyside is also home to the Pittsburgh Equality Center, the city's primary LGBTQ+ community hub.

Lawrenceville

Butler Street in Lawrenceville has become Pittsburgh's most walkable queer corridor. Within a 10-minute walk you'll find Blue Moon (known as the friendliest gay bar in Pittsburgh), Caffè d'Amore, and Sanctuary Pittsburgh. A few blocks away on Liberty Avenue, The Brewer's Bar is one of the oldest standing gay bars in the city.

Other Queer-Friendly Areas

  • Bloomfield — Pittsburgh's "Little Italy" adjacent to Lawrenceville, with a growing queer presence and home to P Town Bar
  • Millvale — Just north of Lawrenceville, home to Harold's Haunt, one of the few bars in the country explicitly positioning itself as a "They-Bar" centering non-binary and trans identities
  • Squirrel Hill — Progressive, diverse neighborhood popular with LGBTQ+ families
