Part of the Gay Pittsburgh Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Lower Lawrenceville's craft-beer gay bar with weekend drag, since 1981.
The Brewer's Bar sits at 3315 Liberty Avenue in Lower Lawrenceville and is widely cited as Pittsburgh's oldest continuously operating gay bar. Andy Usner turned the old Brewer's Hotel into a gay bar here in 1981, and the room has anchored the city's LGBTQ+ community for more than four decades since. Its history runs deeper than most: during the worst years of the AIDS epidemic, Usner opened the hotel rooms above the bar to people with the illness who had been pushed out by their families, often housing and feeding them for free. Today it's a community bar more than a scene bar, with drag, trivia, karaoke, and a steady connection to Pittsburgh's leather and fetish crowd, which rallied to support the place through a recent ownership change. It reopened under new management in 2025 after a sale fell through, keeping the legacy intact. For a traveler, this is the historical heart of gay Pittsburgh, worth a stop for the story as much as the night.
