New York City, New York
Laid-back gay watering hole in Hell's Kitchen with affordable drinks.
The 9th Avenue Saloon is Hell's Kitchen's longest-running gay bar, on 9th Avenue between 45th and 46th in the Theater District. It has anchored the block for more than four decades, operating earlier as Town & Country and then Cleo's before settling into its current name. After closing in March 2020 during the pandemic, it reopened in June 2022 — gay-owned and operated for the first time in its history — popcorn machine included. The room is small, unpretentious, and cheap by Manhattan standards: strong pours, friendly bartenders, and a regulars-plus-newcomers crowd that makes it an easy first or last stop on a Hell's Kitchen night. It's the no-frills neighborhood counterweight to the flashier bars a few doors up 9th Avenue — come for conversation and a stiff drink rather than a dance floor.
