Part of the Gay Berlin Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Berlin, Germany
Germany's oldest gay nonprofit and community center, volunteer-run since 1974.
One of Germany's oldest gay organizations, founded in 1974 in West Berlin as the Allgemeine Homosexuelle Arbeitsgemeinschaft (General Homosexual Working Group). By 1982 it was Germany's largest gay organization with over 200 members. The current space at Monumentenstrasse 13, on the Schoneberg/Kreuzberg border, opened in October 2010 after losing the previous Mehringdamm venue during a 2008 financial crisis. The center runs entirely on volunteers with zero public funding — the only queer project in Berlin operating that way. Programming includes a Sunday cafe, game nights, Qyouth group, karaoke, cabaret, cultural shows, and an annual Terrassenfest summer terrace festival. All decisions are made through monthly public assemblies. The cafe and beer garden make it a daytime community hub, not just a nightlife space.
