New York City, New York
Hell's Kitchen Mexican institution since 1984, sustained by decades of gay community loyalty
A family-owned Mexican restaurant on 9th Avenue and 51st Street that has been part of Hell's Kitchen for over 40 years — predating the neighborhood's identity as a gay corridor. Owner Amalia Sarmiento has credited the LGBTQ+ community directly for keeping the doors open since 1984. Monday nights draw Broadway performers on their dark night. The margaritas are the signature: sizes run from El Papa ($12) up to La Abuela (32 oz, $31), frozen or on the rocks. The menu covers tacos de birria, enchiladas suizas, and sashimi tacos alongside brunch on weekends (Fri-Sun noon to 4pm, ~$14 including a drink). Sidewalk patio seating on 9th Ave. Two blocks from Hell's Kitchen's main gay bar strip.
