Part of the Gay Berlin Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Berlin, Germany
Moody gay Kneipe in Prenzlauer Berg with celebrity photo walls and a darkroom.
Trauerspiel is a small gay Kneipe on Milastraße in Prenzlauer Berg, named for the German word for "tragedy" and decorated to match: a dark, moody room whose walls are covered with dozens of framed photos of late celebrities. That memorial-wall decor gives the place an atmosphere you won't find replicated anywhere else in Berlin, and it's the reason regulars keep it close to their hearts. The crowd skews gay and bi men, the pours are strong and cheap, and the soundtrack wanders from eclectic to pop oldies. A darkroom at the back is there for anyone after more than conversation, but the front stays a relaxed neighborhood bar where people actually talk. It's not a club or a dance floor — it's the kind of low-key local you settle into for a few hours rather than pass through.
