Part of the Gay Berlin Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Berlin, Germany
Prenzlauer Berg's only bear bar, a social neighborhood Kneipe open since 1999.
Bärenhöhle, the "Bear Cave," has been the bear bar of Prenzlauer Berg since October 1999. Most of Berlin's gay scene clusters around Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg; this small, cozy Kneipe serves the eastern and northern neighborhoods instead, and it's the bear meeting point for that side of the city. It's a social bar, not a cruise spot, with no darkroom and no fetish nights. The music stays low enough to actually talk (oldies, Schlager, and international pop from the '70s on), and a singalong isn't unusual when the room's in the mood. There's a summer terrace, and Wednesday is the long-running half-price night. Friendly, unpretentious, and a genuine local's bar rather than a tourist stop, it's worth the trip if you want the bear scene away from Schöneberg.
