Los Angeles, California
Iconic WeHo gay adult bookstore — toys, books, and an art gallery.
Circus of Books is the landmark gay adult store at 8230 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood's Rainbow District. It opened as Book Circus in 1960 and took the Circus of Books name in 1980; the Mason family ran it for decades as a community fixture and porn-shop institution until they closed it in February 2019 — the story told in the 2020 Netflix documentary "Circus of Books," directed by their daughter Rachel Mason. The space reopened in January 2020, briefly as Chi Chi LaRue's Circus, and operates today again under the original Circus of Books name, with Rob Novinger now the owner. Inside you'll find adult toys, lube, jockstraps, greeting cards, coffee-table books, and tees, plus "The Gallery @ Circus" spotlighting local LGBTQ+ artists. A sister shop, Circus of Books West, operates a few blocks down at 8861 Santa Monica Blvd. More than a store, it's a piece of WeHo queer history that's still open for business.
