Little Rock, Arkansas
Gay nightclub in Little Rock's Riverdale district, open since 1979
Discovery is a 22,000-square-foot gay nightclub in Little Rock's Riverdale warehouse district, running since 1979 and settled into this warehouse since 1982, which makes it one of the longest continuously owner-operated clubs of its kind in the country. It was founded by Norman Jones, the Arkansas performer and impresario who won the first Miss Gay America pageant in 1973 and later moved the pageant to Little Rock. The club is laid out in three rooms: a main floor for hip-hop and Top 40, the Caliente Room for Latin pop, and the Athena Theatre, home to the weekly drag show. Discovery opens Saturdays only, and its 5am license makes it the late-night anchor of the local scene, the room where the night keeps going long after everything else has closed. What began as a strictly gay club draws a mixed crowd now without losing its place at the center of Little Rock's queer nightlife. If you're in town for a weekend and want one big night out, this is it.
