San Juan's dedicated bear bar, hub for leather, pup, and kink events
El Purgatorio is San Juan's dedicated bear bar, opened in December 2023 on Calle del Carmen in Santurce, the same busy strip as the city's other late-night gay bars. Co-owned by Miguel Matos of Puerto Rico Bear Events, it filled the gap left when the pandemic shuttered the island's previous bear hangout, The Bear Tavern, and the bear and leather community has treated it as a homecoming. The programming is built squarely for that crowd: leather, pup and underwear nights alongside bear-centric drag, and the bar serves as the local hub for Folsom San Juan and San Juan Bear Weekend. It runs mainly on Friday and Saturday nights, with a primarily local, Spanish-speaking crowd, so it reads more like a neighborhood scene bar than a tourist stop, which is much of its appeal. For a bear or leather traveler it's the clear anchor in San Juan, and the place to be during the city's bear and fetish events. Anyone outside that scene is still welcome, but the room is unapologetically built for the bears.
