La Sombrilla Rosa, "the pink umbrella," is the most recognizable queer bar in Old San Juan, a small, lively spot on Calle San Sebastián marked by the bright umbrella that gives it its name. It leans into Puerto Rican character: affordable, fast-pouring drinks, with the margaritas, mojitos, and Jell-O shots doing the heavy lifting, a younger crowd, and a steady run of themed nights and drag. Unlike the bigger Santurce clubs, this is a street-side neighborhood bar where you wind up talking to strangers, and it gets packed once the night gets going. It hits its peak during January's Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, when Old San Juan's most famous street party spills past the door. Worth a stop for anyone wanting the historic-quarter, walk-up side of San Juan's queer scene rather than a late-night dance floor.
