San Francisco, California
Queer-owned Castro bookstore in the former A Different Light space.
Queer-owned bookstore on Castro Street, opened in September 2021 by author Alvin Orloff in the storefront that previously housed A Different Light Bookstore. More than half the stock is LGBTQ+ titles — seven display cases of queer literature greet you at the entrance — alongside sections for sci-fi, poetry, progressive politics, cookbooks, and literary fiction. They also carry stickers, buttons, and postcards, and buy, sell, and trade used books. Fabulosa hosts author readings, a monthly LGBT book club, and Books Not Bans, a nonprofit program that ships queer literature to organizations in states with book bans. Orloff calls it the Castro's living room, and regulars treat it that way — a bright, airy space with local art on the walls and a staff that knows what to recommend.
