Part of the Gay New York City Guide — bars, events & things to do.

New York City, New York
Queens' longest-running LGBTQ+ bar in the heart of Jackson Heights.
Friend's Tavern is the oldest gay bar in Queens, open on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights since 1989 and a cornerstone of the borough's Latino LGBTQ+ life. Owners Eddie Valentin and Casimiro Villa — Puerto Rican and Colombian, respectively — bought the building outright in 2021, securing the bar's future. In 1993 it helped launch the first Queens Pride, marching and sponsoring the block party, and the neighborhood's queer history is woven through the place. It's a no-frills room built for regulars: a low-key dance floor, reasonable drinks, Latin beats, and drag shows that pull a down-to-earth crowd. This is a community bar first and a destination second — which is exactly why it's worth the 7 train out to Jackson Heights if you want to see queer New York beyond the Manhattan circuit.
