Part of the Gay New York City Guide — bars, events & things to do.
New York City, New York
Chelsea's original gay sports bar, two levels, since 2005 on 8th Ave.
Gym Sportsbar has anchored 8th Avenue in Chelsea since 2005 as New York's original gay sports bar, the first of its kind in the city and still the default spot to catch a game with a queer crowd. The two-level layout keeps the action on the main floor: flat-screens tuned to pro sports, pool tables, and arcade games, with the 'Locker Room' lounge tucked downstairs. The room skews toward the bear and jock end of the scene, friendly and unpretentious rather than a dance-night destination. It doesn't do food or bottle service, which keeps it honest about what it is: a place to drink, watch the game, and shoot pool. A 2-for-1 happy hour runs weekday afternoons into the evening, when the regulars filter in and the bar feels most like a neighborhood fixture.
