New York City, New York
Bushwick's queer tiki dive bar, open since 2013 with a backyard patio.
Happyfun Hideaway is a queer tiki dive on Myrtle Avenue in Bushwick, open since 2013 and run by a collective of local artists and musicians with roots in the neighborhood's Bushwig drag scene. The look is handmade camp — tropical kitsch, acid-bright cutouts, pinball machines, draft margaritas poured from a poodle-shaped tap, and a projector screen running everything from obscure cinema to anime. Once the weather turns, the spacious backyard patio becomes the main event. The vibe is unpretentious and arty, the drinks are cheap, and the calendar leans on rotating queer DJ nights, reggae Saturdays, and Sunday movie double-features with pizza and beer. It's the kind of low-key, come-as-you-are Brooklyn spot that doesn't try too hard — a good anchor for a night out in Bushwick, especially if the slicker Williamsburg scene isn't your speed.
