Part of the Gay New York City Guide — bars, events & things to do.
New York City, New York
NYC's legendary lesbian bar in the West Village, open for decades.
Henrietta Hudson opened on Hudson Street in the West Village in 1991 and is the longest-running lesbian bar in the country, a survivor in a category that has lost most of its members nationwide. Founder Lisa Cannistraci built it into an institution, and as the community's language and makeup shifted, the bar reframed itself as a queer space built by and for queer women and the broader LGBTQ+ community. Midweek it runs casual: drinks, snacks, trivia, and live music in a low-key room. On weekends it turns into a full party with DJs and dancing. The crowd is queer women, nonbinary folks, and friends of the family, and the welcome is the whole point. For travelers, it's one of the few remaining bars of its kind anywhere, which makes it worth crossing town for on its history alone.
