Part of the Gay Washington D.C. Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Washington D.C., Washington D.C.
A tiny LGBTQ+ cafe and bar above a comics shop on U Street.
LGBTQ-owned cafe and bar on the second floor above Big Planet Comics on U Street. At 600 square feet, it's one of D.C.'s smallest bars — a deliberate choice by owner Spencer Hurd, a queer Air Force veteran and former NASA employee who modeled the space after gay cafes he visited in Germany. Homoerotic artwork lines the walls, and the seating mixes bar stools with living-room couches. The cocktail list leans toward espresso martinis, Negronis, and house spritzers, with a cheeseboard and light snacks alongside. Open afternoons through late evening (weekdays from 4 PM, weekends from 11 AM for brunch). The vibe splits the difference between a low-key house party and an after-hours coffeehouse — built for conversation, not volume.
