Mexico's first LGBTQ+ community kitchen, serving 100+ meals daily
Up in Colonia Guerrero, in a slim storefront on Pedro Moreno about three blocks off Paseo de la Reforma, this is the country's first LGBTQ+ community kitchen — and after almost five years it's grown into a full-on neighborhood center that feeds anyone who walks in, LGBTQ+ or not, for 11 pesos a plate. Founded in 2021 by Brent Alberghini through his nonprofit Americas Unite, the comedor serves around 100 to 200 meals a day Monday through Friday: soup, rice, beans, a daily guisado, tortillas, and water. What makes it specifically worth a Friday afternoon visit is the cultural program at 3pm — vogue balls, drag, live music, poetry, DJs, art openings — booked by María Veras and aimed squarely at the trans women, sex workers, migrants, and older LGBTQ+ folks who keep the kitchen alive. Bring cash for the meal and an extra donation if you can.
