Part of the Gay San Francisco Guide — bars, events & things to do.
San Francisco, California
Castro video bar since 1971, screens cycling hits and throwbacks.
One of the Castro's longest-running gay bars and one of the country's first gay video bars, open since 1971. It started up the block at 506 Castro Street and moved around the corner to its 18th Street home in 1981, where big screens still run all night — current hits, retro throwbacks, and the kind of TV-clip montages that have defined the room for decades. The high-ceilinged, black-box space keeps its street-facing windows open to the 18th Street foot traffic. The afternoon-into-evening happy hour is a long-standing neighborhood draw, and nightly programming runs from RuPaul's Drag Race viewing parties and Mahogany Mondays drag to go-go nights. It's a video bar first — come to watch, sing along, and people-watch rather than to dance.
