San Francisco, California
LGBTQ+ theater company near Civic Center, staging queer work since 1981.
NCTC has been producing queer theater since 1981, when Ed Decker founded it as a youth conservatory — it launched its first Pride Season of explicitly LGBTQ+ theater in 1995 and has staged 40+ world premieres since, including 13 Terrence McNally plays. The company occupies three basement theaters at 25 Van Ness Avenue near Civic Center: the 130-seat Decker Theatre, plus two ~60-seat flexible spaces (Walker and Tucker). Seasons run the full range — rock musicals like Hedwig and the Angry Inch, new commissions, cabaret, comedy, and drama. The annual Pride Cabaret brings drag and live performance every June. NCTC's YouthAware program, launched during the AIDS crisis in 1986, has toured health-education plays to more than 4.5 million young people across the U.S. and abroad. Mason's Bar is on-site for pre-show drinks.
