Part of the Gay Phoenix Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix’s longtime gay dive bar, slinging cheap beer since 1971.
Phoenix's oldest gay bar, open since 1971 on East Van Buren near Papago Park, across the street from the landmark Tovrea Castle. Nu Towne survived a 2010 fire that gutted the interior and rebuilt with even more personality: a miniature Eiffel Tower on the roof, a 7-foot plaster rooster inside, and antiques crowding every wall. The building is narrow and deceptively deep, opening onto an outdoor patio out back. Friday Cruise Night draws the bears-and-leather crowd and has been a Phoenix institution for close to 40 years; Sunday Beer Bust pairs cheap Budweiser with a BBQ spread. The rest of the week rotates through karaoke, Pokeno, and drink specials. It's a dive that's earned every year on its resume, and the anchor for anyone who wants the city's gay history rather than its newest scene.
