LGBTQ+ community center of the Mid-South, founded 1989.
The LGBTQ+ Community Center of the Mid-South has worked out of this Cooper Street bungalow since 2008, though the organization goes back to 1989, when it opened as the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center. Supporters bought the house that year and began hiring full-time staff; the name changed to OUTMemphis in 2017. Support groups, sexual health services and testing, youth programming, education and referrals all run year-round, and its reach covers Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas — the longest-running LGBTQ+ nonprofit in the state. A second site, the Youth Empowerment Center, operates separately on Southern Avenue.
