Midtown theater, home stage of Friends of George’s.
This Poplar Avenue theater is the home stage of Friends of George’s, the drag theater company founded in 2011 that became the lead plaintiff in the challenge to Tennessee’s 2023 restrictions on adult cabaret performance. The company takes its name from George’s, the Memphis drag bar that ran from 1969 into the late 1980s, and writes original comedic plays built around drag, staging roughly three productions a season. The room itself is run by TheatreWorks, a nonprofit that rents low-cost rehearsal and performance space to emerging companies, so the wider calendar mixes drama, dance and music alongside the drag work. Emerald Theatre Company, which produces specifically for LGBTQ+ Memphis, also performs here.
