Amsterdam, Netherlands
Gay cocktail bar since 2006 with prosecco on tap and Sunday karaoke
Open since 2006, PRIK is a gay cocktail bar on Spuistraat in the Centrum, a short walk from Dam Square and the Royal Palace. The name is Dutch for “bubbles,” a nod to the prosecco on tap — including a pink version — and the small room is saturated in pink to match. In warmer months a street terrace pulls in afternoon drinkers. Weekday evenings stay low-key and conversational; weekends bring DJs spinning vocal house, pop and disco with no cover, and the compact space fills fast. Sunday karaoke is an institution, with free shots for the first ten singers. During Amsterdam Pride week PRIK throws its own street festival, with stages, drag and food trucks spilling out across Spuistraat. It's a reliable first stop on this side of the Centrum — close to the major sights, easy to fall into for one drink, and just as easy to stay in all night.

The practical first-timer's guide to drag: what people actually wear, how much cash to bring, how to hand a tip to a queen without making it weird, and what the room expects of you.

A gay bar is a bar. Here's what actually happens on a normal night, why walking in alone is easier than you think, and how to pick the right one for your first time.

A calm, practical answer to every question first-timers actually have about gay bathhouses — how check-in works, the unwritten rules, what things cost, and why almost everyone there came alone.

The rainbow flag has meant something specific since 1978 — one word per stripe, assigned by the man who dyed the first one. What every color means, why two stripes are gone, and all the other flags.

Drag is an art form, not an identity, and what people assume about it is off. Here's what a drag queen actually is, where drag came from, what the job pays, and how the illusion gets built.
