Berlin, Germany
World's first queer museum, founded 1985 — archives, exhibitions, and film in Tiergarten.
The world's first museum dedicated to queer history, founded in 1985 and now housed in a 1,600-square-meter former printing factory on Lützowstraße in Tiergarten, where it moved in 2013 from its original Kreuzberg home on Mehringdamm. The museum grew out of "Eldorado," a landmark 1984 exhibition on homosexual life in Berlin that became the first public showing of recent gay-history research in Germany. Its archive (among the largest of its kind anywhere) holds periodicals dating to 1896, a deep photography and film collection, and a library of more than 20,000 volumes on homosexuality and gender identity. Rotating temporary exhibitions cover gay, lesbian, trans, and bisexual life stories from Berlin and far beyond, alongside film screenings, lectures, and guided tours. Sitting outside the usual Schöneberg bar circuit, it's a serious cultural anchor in a city better known for its nightlife, and an essential stop for travelers who want the history behind the scene.
