Part of the Gay Amsterdam Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Amsterdam, Netherlands
One of Amsterdam's oldest gay bars on Kerkstraat — casual, no-nonsense
Spijker Bar has been pouring on Kerkstraat since 1978, which makes it one of the oldest gay bars in Amsterdam and one of the most determinedly low-key. It's a dive at heart: a friendly neighborhood room with a pool table at the back that's usually the center of the action, comic strips and vintage clips on the screens, and no attitude at the door. The crowd runs older and local, heavy on regulars, with travelers folded in easily. There's a small darkroom for those who want it, but the front bar is squarely about cheap drinks, pool and conversation. Themed nights and drag bingo break up the week. It sits in the Kerkstraat cluster a block off the Reguliersdwarsstraat strip, and it's the antidote to the louder, flashier bars nearby — the place to start or end a night when you'd rather talk than shout.
