New York City, New York
Bushwick dyke bar with a dance floor, Caribbean cocktails, and non-alcoholic options
The Bush is a dyke bar in Bushwick, Brooklyn, opened in 2023 by Nikke Alleyne and Justine LaViolette — friends who spent years dreaming up a lesbian-centered space for queer women and the wider queer community before finally building it. It bills itself plainly as a dyke bar for queers, and it puts queer people of color at the center. The layout is simple: a narrow bar up front for drinks and conversation, a dance floor in the back for when the night picks up, all washed in purple light and disco-ball sparkle, with Caribbean-inspired cocktails and a genuinely good non-alcoholic menu. Open Tuesday through Sunday and 21+, the programming rotates through DJ nights, comedy, queer speed dating, poly mixers, and community events, with daily drink specials. In a city that has watched its lesbian bars disappear for decades, The Bush is one of the very few purpose-built additions in recent memory — reason enough for the trip to Troutman Street if a dyke bar is what you're after.
