San Francisco, California
The first national LGBTQ+ arts center, home of the SF Gay Men's Chorus.
The first national LGBTQ+ arts center in the United States, housed in a 23,000-square-foot, four-story 1931 building on Valencia Street at the crossroads of the Mission, Castro, and Hayes Valley. Operated by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, the space opened in October 2023 after a five-year renovation of the historic Harold Stoner-designed hall, funded in part by a $5 million gift from SFGMC member Terrence D. Chan. The center hosts live choral performances, ensemble showcases, and collaborations with organizations like the SF Symphony and BroadwaySF. It also runs the Memory Keepers Initiative, an oral-history project preserving LGBTQ+ activist voices, and RHYTHM, a youth music outreach program in Bay Area schools. Rehearsal and production space is available to other LGBTQ+ arts organizations at affordable rates.
