Part of the Gay San Francisco Guide — bars, events & things to do.
San Francisco, California
Polk Street's last gay bar — a western-saloon neighborhood classic.
The last gay bar standing on Polk Street — San Francisco's original gayborhood, where the city's first Pride march stepped off in 1970. Open since 1974, The Cinch is the second-oldest gay bar in the city (after Twin Peaks). The western-facade exterior is the last surviving piece of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition's Old West streetscape. Inside: a 40-foot wooden bar, pool tables, pinball, swinging saloon doors, and a rear smoking patio. New owner Scott Taylor (a longtime patron and former Cinch bartender) took over in 2025 with a plan to preserve the dive-bar character while upgrading the cocktail program.
