Baltimore, Maryland
Historic Mount Vernon gay dive bar since 1972 with 2-for-1 pours
The Drinkery has held its corner of Read Street in Mount Vernon since 1972, and it wears every one of those years. This is a true gay dive — a snug, kitschy room defined by its V-shaped bar, yellow walls, and a throwback snack machine, pouring cheap and heavy for a crowd that has never wanted it any other way. For decades it was run by owner Fred Allen, who kept an apartment above the bar until his death in 2017. Behind the main room sits an attached lounge called "The Other Side," a quieter space with a more cocktail-minded menu for when the front bar gets loud. Karaoke is the weekend draw. As one of the longest-running gay bars in the city, the Drinkery is less a night's main event than a reliable, unglamorous stop on a Mount Vernon crawl — and that's exactly its appeal.
