About The Duplex

The Duplex is New York's longest-running cabaret bar, founded in 1951 and on Christopher Street, a block from the Stonewall Inn, since 1989. Barbra Streisand, Joan Rivers, Woody Allen, and Richard Pryor all played its rooms early in their careers, and Hal Holbrook developed Mark Twain Tonight! upstairs before taking it to Broadway. Three spaces stack the building: a ground-floor piano bar with a nightly open mic starting around 9 PM, an upstairs bar with drag performances and DJs, and a cabaret theater that reopened in October 2024 after a multi-year rebuild following a roof fire. The piano bar, with its singing bartenders, show-tune singalongs, and steady rotation of players, is the heart of it, the kind of room where the whole place ends up harmonizing by midnight. It's a tourist landmark and a local haunt at once, equally at home with a West Village regular and a first-timer working through the Christopher Street history. Open daily into the early morning.
