New York City, New York
West Village piano bar and basement dance floor, open since 1982
Two bars in one West Village building, open since 1982. Upstairs, a 360-degree piano bar where Martin St. Lawrence has held the bench for over 31 years, backed by rotating pianists seven nights a week. Original Spanish murals from the building's 1929 El Chico restaurant days still cover the walls, and Lalique chandeliers hang overhead. Downstairs, "The Bassment" — a dance floor reached via a mirrored staircase — hosts DJs and the Sunday Situation, running continuously for 35-plus years as one of NYC's longest-running tea dances. The Monster earned a Village Preservation Award in 2023. The crowd is multigenerational and mixed — the kind of place where someone belting show tunes upstairs can hear the bass from the dance floor below.
