Amsterdam, Netherlands
1950s glam gay bar on the Zeedijk with Tuesday Drag Bingo since 1998
The Queen's Head has been a gay bar on the Zeedijk since 1998, and it has one feature almost no other gay bar in Amsterdam can claim: a back room that opens straight onto the point where two canals meet. The interior plays it up with 1950s glam kitsch — red wallpaper, chandeliers, heavy curtains. John Jepma and Leon Oppers have run it since 2015. Tuesday's Drag Queen Bingo (from 8:30pm) has been the signature night since the bar opened, popular enough after an early TV appearance that people started reserving seats. A bi-weekly queer pub quiz and bear-drinks nights round out the week, and Eurovision and King's Day are annual blowouts. It sits at the quieter end of the Zeedijk near Nieuwmarkt, on the edge of the Red Light District — central, characterful, and a good anchor for a night that starts with a canal-side view.
