New York City, New York
Latin gay bar on Roosevelt Ave with salsa, drag shows, and karaoke in Jackson Heights
True Colors is a Latin gay bar on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens — one of the city's most diverse LGBTQ+ neighborhoods and home to the annual Queens Pride Parade. The music runs salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, and Top 40; the crowd is largely Latin and drawn from the surrounding immigrant communities; and the bar has been open more than 20 years. It's one of the anchor venues on a strip that also includes Friend's Tavern, long billed as the oldest gay bar in Queens. Weekly programming includes drag shows, DJs, go-go dancers, karaoke, bingo, and themed nights like Underwear Wednesdays and PLAYBOYZ on Fridays. The space is dark, draped, and lit with lasers — built for late-night dancing rather than brunch — and the door keeps a friendly, no-attitude crowd. For travelers it's worth the 7-train ride out to Queens to see a side of New York nightlife the Manhattan bars don't offer: bilingual, neighborhood-rooted, and Latin to the core.
