Part of the Gay New York City Guide — bars, events & things to do.
New York City, New York
NYC's longest-running bear bar at 114 Christopher St, pouring since 1972
Ty's has been serving drinks at 114 Christopher Street since 1972 — three years after the Stonewall uprising, making it the oldest continuously operating gay bar on the block. The vibe hasn't changed much: dim lights, strong pours, upbeat music at conversation volume, and a strict no-attitude door policy that's kept regulars coming back for five decades. The bar is the city's longest-running bear bar, a designation it earned naturally as the leather/Levi's crowd of the '70s evolved into the bear community of the late '80s. It's the official bar of the Empire City Motorcycle Club — New York's oldest gay motorcycle club — and sponsors multiple LGBTQ+ sports teams. Ty's draws a loyal international following; regulars from London, Dublin, Berlin, and Sydney treat it as their NYC home base.
