Minneapolis, Minnesota
Find the alley behind the building, look for the door with the red light, knock, and a pair of eyes will greet you through the slider. This 1920s speakeasy — named after Andrew Volstead, the Minnesota congressman behind Prohibition enforcement — has been one of Uptown's most magnetic nightlife destinations since 2015. Inside: dim lighting, velvet curtains, antique furniture, false doors, hidden rooms. Now owned by Bessie Snow, a burlesque performer and emcee who's expanded the programming far beyond cocktails-in-a-dark-room. Live jazz runs throughout the week (gypsy jazz, fusion, flamenco), Easy Speak is a free monthly comedy showcase, and Bessie's own burlesque revue — the only one of its kind in the Twin Cities — regularly sells out. The cocktail menu rotates constantly and the bartenders are genuinely great at guiding you; zero-proof options and NA beer/wine available too. Don't skip the food — the burger is frequently called the best in Minneapolis. Reservations via Tock; walk-ins always welcome.
