Neighborhoods·Austin Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in Austin?

Austin's primary gay district is the Fourth Street Warehouse District, a stretch of West 4th Street between Colorado Street and Lavaca Street in downtown Austin. This compact strip has been the heart of Austin's LGBTQ+ nightlife since the mid-1970s and remains the go-to destination for a gay night out.

What to Find on Fourth Street

Fourth Street packs Austin's highest concentration of gay bars into just a few blocks. Oilcan Harry's (211 W 4th St) is Austin's oldest continuously running gay bar, open since 1990. Right next door, Rain (217 W 4th St) is a high-energy dance club with multiple rooms and themed nights. Highland Lounge brings a multi-level club experience, while Neon Grotto (318 Colorado St) offers a more intimate craft cocktail vibe.

East Austin & Red River District

Just east of downtown, Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River St) is a beloved queer-owned bar and live music venue with a sprawling patio. The surrounding East Austin area has a large LGBTQ+ residential population and a growing number of queer-friendly businesses, including The Little Gay Shop on East Cesar Chavez.

South Congress (SoCo)

South Congress is a popular LGBTQ+ residential neighborhood with a vibrant shopping and dining corridor. While not a nightlife district, it's home to Halcyon Coffee and a queer-friendly daytime scene. Austin as a whole is notably integrated — LGBTQ+ residents live across the entire city rather than concentrating in a single enclave.
