Neighborhoods·San Francisco Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in San Francisco?

San Francisco's primary gay neighborhood is the Castro District, located on the city's western edge of the Mission District. Centered along Castro Street between Market Street and 19th Street, it has been the heart of LGBTQ+ culture since the early 1970s and is widely considered one of the most famous gay neighborhoods in the world.

What to Find in the Castro

The Castro is home to a dense concentration of gay bars, restaurants, shops, and community organizations. Major landmarks include The Castro Theatre (a 1922 movie palace and cultural icon), the Harvey Milk Memorial Plaza, Pink Triangle Memorial, and the GLBT Historical Society Museum. Rainbow crosswalks and flags line the streets, and the neighborhood is home to dozens of gay bars including Twin Peaks Tavern, Beaux, Badlands SF, and 440 Castro.

SoMa (South of Market)

SoMa is San Francisco's secondary LGBTQ+ neighborhood, historically rooted in leather and kink culture. It's home to SF Eagle Bar, Powerhouse, Lone Star Saloon, and OASIS (a cabaret and drag venue). The Folsom Street Fair, the world's largest leather event, takes place here every September.

The Mission & Beyond

Dolores Park in the Mission is a beloved gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community, especially on sunny weekends. The Mission also has queer-friendly bars like El Rio and Jolene's Bar and Restaurant.
