Are There Lesbian Bars and Safe Spaces in New York City?
New York City is one of the best cities in the country for queer women, home to two of America's most iconic lesbian bars and a thriving scene of sapphic events.
Cubbyhole
Cubbyhole (281 W 12th St, West Village) is one of the last remaining dedicated lesbian bars in the United States, open since 1994. The tiny, beloved dive is covered floor to ceiling in hanging toys, holiday lights, and colorful kitsch. It draws a mixed crowd of queer women and allies every night. No cover, strong drinks, and an unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere. If you visit one queer women's space in NYC, this is it.
Henrietta Hudson
Henrietta Hudson (438 Hudson St, West Village) is NYC's longest-running lesbian bar, open since 1991. It underwent a renovation and rebrand in recent years, positioning itself as a space for queer women and friends. Features DJ nights, themed parties, and a polished cocktail-bar vibe. Still a cornerstone of the community.
Sapphic Nights & Recurring Events
Beyond the dedicated bars, NYC has a thriving queer women's party scene:
- Hot Rabbit — One of NYC's biggest and longest-running queer women's party series, throwing events at various venues around the city (often in Brooklyn)
- Dyke Beer — Queer women's social events at Brooklyn breweries and bars. More low-key and social than a dance party
- 3 Dollar Bill (Williamsburg) — Regularly hosts queer women's events, drag king shows, and sapphic dance nights
- Happyfun Hideaway (1211 Myrtle Ave, Bushwick) — Queer-owned bar that hosts frequent sapphic and queer women's nights
Dyke March
The NYC Dyke March takes place on the Saturday of Pride weekend (June 27, 2026). It's a grassroots, unpermitted march centering lesbian, bisexual, queer women, and nonbinary people — a powerful annual tradition.
