An 87-room adults-only gay boutique hotel in Schöneberg, a few minutes' walk from Nollendorfplatz and the KaDeWe department store — about as central as you can stay inside Berlin's historic gay quarter. It's the Berlin property of the international Axel Hotels group (Barcelona, Madrid, Miami, and beyond), and runs on the chain's openly gay, "hetero-friendly" ethos rather than the other way around. The draw upstairs is a sixth-floor rooftop wellness area with an outdoor jacuzzi over the skyline, plus a sauna and hammam; downstairs there's the street-level Urban Bar and Madloba, a Georgian restaurant with a garden patio. Rooms run compact and modern — small by American standards but well-designed. The hotel programs around the city's queer calendar, with events tied to Christopher Street Day and Folsom Europe, which makes it less a place to sleep and more a base camp for the season.
