Kitschy Barbie-themed queer cocktail bar in Kreuzberg
BarbieBar is a cult queer bar with a sidewalk café on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg, named for the Barbie dolls that have been accumulating here since 2001 — swinging from the lamps, posed on the shelves, staged in little scenes across the room. By afternoon it's a café with coffee and a rotating spread of cakes and tarts; by night it's a cocktail and wine bar where gay men, lesbians, and drag queens mix in a small, pink, deliberately campy room. It's a Kreuzberg institution rather than a scene-defining nightclub — a relaxed, talk-friendly spot good for an early drink or an afternoon coffee before the neighborhood gets going. Regular events and drag shows keep it from being just a novelty, and the doll-crammed décor makes it one of the more photographed queer rooms in the district. It's a smokers' bar, open evenings through most of the week.
