Part of the Gay Philadelphia Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
South Street dive bar with live jazz and iconic Thursday drag nights.
Bob & Barbara's Lounge has held down its stretch of South Street since 1969, an unpretentious dive that's become one of Philadelphia's true institutions. It's the home of the original Citywide Special — a can of beer and a shot of whiskey for a few bucks — a combo the bar is credited with inventing and that has since spread to dives across the country. The signature draw is Thursday night: Philadelphia's longest-running drag show, hosted for years by Miss Lisa Lisa, with two seatings and a small cover. Weekends bring live jazz, and the retro, no-frills room pulls a genuinely mixed crowd — locals, regulars, students, and out-of-towners who heard about the show. It's not a polished Gayborhood lounge; it's a beloved old-school bar with a drag tradition worth planning a Thursday around.
