Founded in a Silver Lake storefront in 1982 by Chuck Rowland — a co-founder of the Mattachine Society, one of the earliest gay rights organizations in the US — Celebration Theatre is Southern California's oldest LGBTQ+ theater company. It opened at the start of the AIDS crisis and gave gay playwrights a stage when few other venues would. The theater world-premiered Naked Boys Singing!, which ran two decades Off-Broadway, and staged the 1986 premiere of Jerker, whose radio broadcast triggered a landmark FCC censorship battle. Over 40+ years, the company has earned 14 Ovation Awards, 13 LA Drama Critics Circle Awards, and 3 GLAAD Media Awards. Now in its fifth decade, the company continues to stage new and provocative LGBTQ+ work across Los Angeles.
