Part of the Gay Fire Island Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Fire Island, New York
The car-free LGBTQ+ beach village at the heart of Cherry Grove.
Cherry Grove is a car-free LGBTQ+ beach village on Fire Island, reachable only by ferry from Sayville on Long Island — and one of the oldest gay and lesbian communities in the United States, with roots reaching back to the 1930s when New York's gay theater crowd began summering here. By the 1940s it had become a gay-majority enclave. At its center stands the Community House and Theatre, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and long a hub of the Grove's celebrated theater and drag tradition. The wide ocean beach is the gathering place — walkable and a short stroll from the Grove's bars and guesthouses.
